Architectural Digest India interview SEPTEMBER 2019

When music director Amaal Mallik approached Mansi Sethna Pandey of The Design House Company to decorate his home, he had a clear picture in mind—he wanted a house that reflected not just his personality but also his lifestyle.

This 800-square-feet, 2-BHK apartment in Mumbai was designed keeping a simple yet modern and functional concept in mind. A lively living room area sporting shades of grey, yellow and red set the tone of the house. The area is peppered with artworks—an attached balcony helps bring in ample sunlight. The wood-clad wall facing the seating area and the flooring help imbue warmth inside the home.

An Open Floor Plan

The kitchen flows into the living room, thereby making the home seem bigger. Wooden wall panels complement the white counters and cabinets. The wall next to the kitchen displays all of Amaal’s prized possessions and awards. A petite yet glamorous bar counter lines the front of the kitchen, adorned with pendant lights. “The mosaic on the bar counter creates a striking and unique element in the entire house, giving it a glamorous look,” says Pandey. The space is awashed with natural light pouring in through the large windows.

Shades of Grey

A small passage from the living room leads into the master bedroom where the modern yet minimal design continues. Brown and grey shades make home here and a peppering of green via plants helps keep the environment relaxed and calm.

Muted tones and ambient lighting awash the master bathroom. The compact space has been designed such that materials and colours help visually open the space.

A Musician’s Refuge

The second bedroom in the home is converted into a sound studio. “All the areas have been acoustically treated with panelling and foam making it sound-proof for the neighbourhood,” says Pandey. The floor plan, acoustic features and choice of construction materials help set the tone for a quiet, private place for Amaal to create music.

Shades of brown, grey and blue brighten up the room. Quirky artworks displayed along the walls and musical instruments sit pretty in all four corners of the space.

The bathroom attached follows the same wood and patterned tile aesthetic but the insertion of white lighting gives the room a brighter, more open feel. The metal sink and textured wall offer a masculine look.
